Post-op instructions for a smooth surgery

Following your surgery, it’s crucial to follow our post-op instructions to ensure a healthy recovery. Adhering to these guidelines will help you heal properly and avoid complications.

Caring for yourself after surgery

Medications and refills

If you were prescribed medications, begin taking them as directed to manage pain and prevent infection. Contact us for refills before running out. After Sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home, and you should avoid operating machinery for at least 24 hours.

Eating and activity

For the first 24 hours, stick to cool liquids and soft foods. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and carbonated drinks for 5 days to reduce the risk of complications like dry socket. Do not use straws for 5 days. Rest and avoid strenuous activity for at least 2 days post-surgery.

Oral hygiene

Brush gently on the evening of your surgery, but avoid the surgical site. If prescribed, use mouth rinse as directed; otherwise, rinse with warm salt water 4-6 times daily. Avoid mouthwash for 5 days.

What to expect after surgery

After your surgery at Cleburne Oral Surgery, some discomfort is normal. However, if you experience severe pain or unusual symptoms, please contact us immediately. Here are some common things to expect during your recovery:

Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal; bite down on gauze and avoid spitting.

Swelling and discoloration: Swelling is common; apply cold compresses and keep your head elevated.

Nausea: Take medications with food to minimize nausea.

Lightheadedness: Move slowly to avoid dizziness.

Sutures: Dissolvable stitches will fall out on their own.

Sharp edges: You may feel rough areas as your bone heals.

Temperature: A mild fever is common, but if it exceeds 101°F, contact us.

Lip numbness: Numbness from Local Anesthesia may last 2 to 8 hours. If it persists, please contact us.

Dry socket: While dry socket is a concern after Tooth Extractions, following our aftercare instructions will prevent it. Our team takes all necessary precautions during the procedure to avoid complications.
